How to Make Face Jugs

Each face jug is handcrafted individually and is a very unique gift.  Because of the handwork involved, there is always some variation from item to item making each piece slightly different and unique.  You will appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of each piece for years to come.

Every piece of pottery is handmade starting as a ball of clay and thrown on a wheel, hand built, sculptured or all three.

Making Face Jugs:

We use quality clay and glazes and usually fire in an electric kiln to over 2100 degrees F.  There is a lot of time put into each face jug.  The jugs are created one at a time, and then set aside to dry for 1 or 2 days.  After this drying time the face is created on the jug by hand building.  It is then set aside to dry for 1 to 2 weeks.  Then we put them in a Kiln to fire to a bisque for about 15 hours.  We take them out of the kiln after letting them cool about 18 hours.  Then we glaze these whimsical folk art pottery face jugs and let the glaze dry for 24 hours.  They are now put in the kiln for about another 8 to 9  hours.  After cooling in the kiln for another day they come out ready to market.

As you can see there is a lot of time and labor that goes into this process.  For safety's sake, we do not use any lead or cadmium in our glazes.

Every handmade face jug carries a piece of the maker’s heart and soul. These face jugs are great home decorations and make great gifts.
